We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Kids say the darnedest things, don’t they? And so it began. An earnest conversation between a father and his daughter. He, who, like 58 million others, had voted for Obama. She had serious questions about the economy and the world around her. He answered her questions as best he could, thoughtfully and thoroughly. They had several conversations about topics beyond her years but serious conversations just the same. He began writing down thoughts and answers that he accumulated from their conversations then started humming ‘American Pie’ an American classic by Don McLean and realized his words fit the song and the beginnings of a song were born.
He asked a guitar-playing friend of his to strum a few chords and the song took shape. The song and the video, complete with images that mirror Barack Obama’s America, to the ‘hope and change’ and ‘fundamental transformation’ that will be the legacy of his presidency, speak to one father’s frustration with the person he voted for and the road it’s taken us down. The good news is, as the song says, we can change this, too. We the People elected Obama. We the People can do better in 2012.
